Argentinians face an escalating crisis of eroding democratic rights and economic freedoms. Over the last decade Argentinian leaders have seized nearly $30 billion in private pension funds, ended central bank independence, and have nationalized major industries. Voices of opposition from journalists, investors, and political leaders are being silenced through President Cristina Kirchner's dismantling of independent media outlets, such as Argentina's largest newspapers 颁濒补谤铆苍 and La Naci贸n.

With free markets and freedom of expression under attack, do Kirchner's assertions of democratic governance ring true, or has Argentina become a "democracy in name only"?

On January 15, 2014, 华体会's Center for Latin American Studies hosted a panel of distinguished experts for a dicussion about the status of democracy in Argentina.
