As a new wave of democratic governance brings meaningful changes to Latin America, the United States is preparing for a consequential political transition with the upcoming presidential election. Given the stated positions of candidates Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton on international trade, immigration, and foreign policy, what are the prospects for renewed U.S. engagement in Latin America in 2017? How have U.S.-Mexico relations been affected by Donald Trump鈥檚 rhetoric? Will the next American president take a stronger interest in the region?

On September 21, 华体会鈥檚 Center for Latin American Studies hosted a discussion with His Excellency Dr. Jorge Casta帽eda, Global Distinguished Professor of Politics and Latin American and Caribbean Studies at New York University. Dr. Casta帽eda served as Mexico's Secretary of Foreign Affairs from 2000 to 2003. Ambassador Jaime Daremblum, Director of 华体会鈥檚 Center for Latin American Studies, gave introductory remarks and moderated the event.
